Saxon and Lyra are two of my favorite clients. They have been working with me for approximately four years now. Saxon was actually one of my very first clients and I’ve had the pleasure of watching him grow into the fun-loving and adventurous spirit that he is today. Lyra was the newest addition to the family and she fit right in with her big bro. They’re like two peas in an intrepid pod. They aren’t afraid to speak their mind, let their imaginations go wild and throw caution to the wind. They get along like gang busters and I always love running around with them. For the following sessions, we decided to keep them close to home. The family would soon be moving to a new neighborhood so we wanted to bring focus to some of their regular routines and everyday rituals within their current home. Because they all live close to the gorgeous coast of Redondo, we were able to end our shoot there. It was a dance party, on the beach, with mom and it was a beautiful way to go out.  All in all, a good couple of shoots with these two and I guarantee there will be much more to come from this dynamic duo in the future. In the meantime here’s a bite-size morsel…

Two weeks ago, on father’s day to be exact, I had the opportunity to work with a larger family that stretched across three generations, the Hastings, Teeles and McCoys. I had worked with the McCoys before but this time I was able to meet all of their grandparents. Due to the size of the shoot (and the magnitude of the schedules put on hold for this) the family made sure to book the shoot with me a year ago. That day had finally come and they all drove out from Orange County to Santa Monica in order to make it happen. They looked absolutely adorable! The sky was cloudy but beautifully dramatic and the beach, cool but not uncomfortable. We started with formal portraits and then we played, just the kids and I.

After the formal portraits were complete, we were all excited to be able to run around under the mid-day sun, which was now peeking out to play as well. It was so entertaining to watch Cade and Berlin, brother and sister, interacting and reacting. They’re closer in age now, can communicate better and have a strong understanding as to who they are. Berlin is very protective of Cade and has definitely taken on the roll of teacher. Cade is more rambunctious and free-spirited but follows his big sis everywhere, mimicking her every move.

As we wrapped up the shoot, Berlin had something important to tell her mother. As mom picked her up, Berlin carefully whispered into her mother’s ear and then shyly looked away, allowing her mother to convey the message aloud for her. “She wants me to invite you to her upcoming birthday party,” she stated with a big smile. I got a little misty, it was the sweetest invitation I’d ever received. I felt accepted. And proud. I love what I do and most of all I love watching the children that I document, grow and change right before my very eyes.
