We managed to get our Christmas card done this year!… and in a timely fashion!!!… lol, I can’t believe it! It’s been about five years since our last card so it was time. In fact, our cattle-dog Shasta is only three years old so this would be her very first Christmas card photo session. In all honesty, I don’t know why it took us so long because our dogs are so easy to work with (we’re blessed) and we had so much fun doing it. And while it did take an obnoxious amount of treats and wackadoo noises from me, to get them to sit pretty, they definitely nailed it in the end.

Meet Bella!.. a spirited 12 year old soul from Columbus Ohio, who loves playing catch, taking long walks in the park, accessorizing, doting on her parents and playing with her best pal- blue man, who’s an old soul himself with torn off limbs, missing stuffing and a nasty tear through his gut… it’s a love/hate relationship but she never leaves home without him.

I met Bella for the first time in our studio but she’s actually been living in Los Angeles for most of her life. She made the trip cross country at the tender age of months and has been flirting with the hipsters ever since. Like a true Angelino, she’s extremely health conscience. She eats organic dehydrated food, takes digestive enzymes, probiotics and a daily regimen of apple cider vinegar.  Like many of us, she can often be spotted at Whole Foods. She’s a lean, green health machine!

In her community, Bella is a bit of a celebrity. Each day before she goes out, she carefully chooses a colorful bandana and then trots out to chat with her fans. The neighbors enjoy seeing what she’s wearing each day and she loves the attention. She’s recently acquired a boyfriend as well. It’s a new relationship and a bit scandalish, since she’s eleven years his senior. His name is Burton and he’s all of one year old, just a pup. So understandably, her most recent nickname on the block “Cougar” but Bella pays no mind since the chemistry is electric and she has much to teach him.

The love that surrounds this girl was prominent and tangible, from the moment she stepped in our studio. She’s so sweet, completely loyal and full of character.  She was a true treat and is welcome to stop by any time. Thank you for your spirit ol’ gal… Ciao Bella!

It was a busy season this year for family portraits. There were familiar families, new families and a few new arrivals to both, which then led to a few “Baby’s First Christmas” cards. I’ll be sharing all of them, within the next few weeks but today’s post is near and dear to my heart for a couple of reasons…

About two years ago, I was introduced to Stephanie and Andrew. Our paths crossed as they were on the hunt for a wedding photographer. They were referred to me through a friend. We met a few times and in the end,  I was blessed to be given the job of documenting their wedding. It was a good one, set to the majestic tune of Manhattan Beach and they have since proven themselves to be some of the coolest peeps in my rolodex.  Ten and 1/2 months ago, they extended their family with a baby boy named Bradley. B-rad for short. For Christmas, they requested a session with me, to introduce B-rad to the camera and document his personality.

Meanwhile (back at the ranch) I recently opened up a studio space with a partner of mine. Our new studio, “Blue Buddha Studios,” took some time to find us however. We had been searching for a space for a solid year. In the end, it was well worth the wait. We couldn’t be more pleased with the results. So when Stephanie called with the special request to shoot Bradley within the studio, I was thrilled. I set to work with a passionate fervor. This would be B-rad’s first Christmas shoot and my first family session within our new studio. On top of all of that, Stephanie was pregnant with their second!… Yep, It was a good day for documenting.

Although it was B-rad’s shoot, B-rad was not going to be alone on this one. Besides his parents, he would have his two favorite companions joining him on this adventure- Max and Bently. His two canine companions, one of which was a Great Dane that came up to my chest. Yeah, big. So I selected a twelve foot white seamless and went straight to work.

The dogs were super sweet. I was charmed by the two of them and could tell that they had spent a lot of time with Bradley. They were so aware and gentle with him. It was obvious that B-rad was the leader of this pack.

At the end of the hour, there was no doubt that we were tired. It was a lot to juggle but we nailed it and Bradley was a total trooper, mostly smiles for the entire hour. I had so much fun. Big love and thanks to everyone involved and to Stephanie and Andrew- Congratulations on your 2nd addition. I cannot wait to meet her too!
