We managed to get our Christmas card done this year!… and in a timely fashion!!!… lol, I can’t believe it! It’s been about five years since our last card so it was time. In fact, our cattle-dog Shasta is only three years old so this would be her very first Christmas card photo session. In all honesty, I don’t know why it took us so long because our dogs are so easy to work with (we’re blessed) and we had so much fun doing it. And while it did take an obnoxious amount of treats and wackadoo noises from me, to get them to sit pretty, they definitely nailed it in the end.

So without further ado, from our family to yours, we’d like to push a tremendous amount of joy and peace your way. Let’s be sure to spread the love this holiday season. Pay it forward, love thy neighbor and inspire the world. Thank you to my readers and clients for helping to create and support Jen Castle Photography. We love and appreciate you all!  xo.        Sincerely,  -Jen, Joe, Shasta and lil Hoshi.

This is always my favorite time of the year, not just because of the many holidays and the cheer that accompanies them but also because of the numerous Christmas cards! From October to December {jcp} becomes a holiday conveyer belt of family portraits, for the sole purpose of creating the perfect family Christmas card… and I loves it! The amount of imagination, planning & excitement that go into these is amazing and the kids are always uber excited.

For this family, we always start off with the same conversation-

Family: “I have no idea what we’re going to do this year. I have no idea how we’re going to top last year. We’ve done everything! ”

(I’ve worked with them for six years now/ about nine different sessions and themes, it’s a lot but definitely not everything… 😉)

Me: Do you have any new locations you frequented with the family this year? hobbies that you performed together? What were the kids into this year? Favorite show? song? movie? etc…”

Family: “I have no idea…”

and then it just clicks- the questions seep in, the aha moment occurs and the creative concept begins to reveal itself. This year, for this family, it was going to be all about Legos. Genius! The boys had thousands of them, had built everything from houses to ships to police stations. They even had a room dedicated to the whole movement, where dad could often be found, building and creating right alongside them. Each member of the family even had a Lego figurine that looked just like themselves. It was serious business. Once I heard all of this, I knew it would make the perfect Christmas card for them.

By finding out what the family loves, I’m usually able to then highlight a variety of ideas. Family portraits, in my opinion, should absolutely reflect the joy and love of the entire family. They should document who they are for that moment in time and showcase what it is that makes them tick. It’s important to have the traditional poses but it’s also equally important to capture their personality and character. The kids especially, love this approach. So I had them build and play as a family for about twenty minutes and then had them pose individually and then as a family. This session was heaps of fun and the family card was a definite success within their community of family and friends. It brings a smile to my face every time I see it. Thanks guys!

Tis the season!… and there will definitely be many more family portraits sessions posted to the blog; tons of examples and new ideas for future sessions. Here’s to the holidays, here’s to documenting them and here’s to all of the holiday cheer being sent through the mail this month. I’m so happy to be a part of it all.

I hope everyone is having a fantastic Easter Sunday. This will be my only work for the day, before I run back into the arms of my family. I’m sure you have plans for dinner or a party of sorts so I thought I would share a fun photographic DIY tip… It’s always important to document family and friends on these occasions since everyone is usually dressed their best, feeling good and let’s face it, it’s rare (at least in my family anyway) to have everyone in one room so make a photo booth. It’s super easy and it’s a great way to collect photos. Take a look around your home and see if you can find a bed sheet, wrapping paper, tissue paper or any extra material laying around. Anything with a cute pattern and a pop of color will work. Next find a well lit wall (anything across from or near a window), tape up or hang your material within that designated area and voila, you’re ready to go. It’s that easy and anyone with a camera phone can use it. You could even compliment it with an accessory or prop box for added fun. It’s a great way to get pictures of the kids AND the adults and it’s fun to watch their imaginations soar within it.

For these portraits, I was asked to create a booth for a three-year old’s birthday party. Mom wanted to have something the kids could warm up to and pose in with their friends. We set up the booth with a pastel spring-like tissue paper. It was a small space however with no natural light available so I used my flash for all of these. Later these images were sent out as gifts, to each family, thanking them for coming to the party. An excellent parting gift in my opinion- low cost, fun, super cute and easy to assemble, that’s my kind of DIY.

Happy Easter everyone!
