This is always my favorite time of the year, not just because of the many holidays and the cheer that accompanies them but also because of the numerous Christmas cards! From October to December {jcp} becomes a holiday conveyer belt of family portraits, for the sole purpose of creating the perfect family Christmas card… and I loves it! The amount of imagination, planning & excitement that go into these is amazing and the kids are always uber excited.

For this family, we always start off with the same conversation-

Family: “I have no idea what we’re going to do this year. I have no idea how we’re going to top last year. We’ve done everything! ”

(I’ve worked with them for six years now/ about nine different sessions and themes, it’s a lot but definitely not everything… 😉)

Me: Do you have any new locations you frequented with the family this year? hobbies that you performed together? What were the kids into this year? Favorite show? song? movie? etc…”

Family: “I have no idea…”

and then it just clicks- the questions seep in, the aha moment occurs and the creative concept begins to reveal itself. This year, for this family, it was going to be all about Legos. Genius! The boys had thousands of them, had built everything from houses to ships to police stations. They even had a room dedicated to the whole movement, where dad could often be found, building and creating right alongside them. Each member of the family even had a Lego figurine that looked just like themselves. It was serious business. Once I heard all of this, I knew it would make the perfect Christmas card for them.

By finding out what the family loves, I’m usually able to then highlight a variety of ideas. Family portraits, in my opinion, should absolutely reflect the joy and love of the entire family. They should document who they are for that moment in time and showcase what it is that makes them tick. It’s important to have the traditional poses but it’s also equally important to capture their personality and character. The kids especially, love this approach. So I had them build and play as a family for about twenty minutes and then had them pose individually and then as a family. This session was heaps of fun and the family card was a definite success within their community of family and friends. It brings a smile to my face every time I see it. Thanks guys!

Tis the season!… and there will definitely be many more family portraits sessions posted to the blog; tons of examples and new ideas for future sessions. Here’s to the holidays, here’s to documenting them and here’s to all of the holiday cheer being sent through the mail this month. I’m so happy to be a part of it all.

Emily and Ryan have been together for three years now. They met at their place of work, flirted here and there and then decided to go out one night after work. My favorite part is that Emily broke the ice first by asking Ryan if he wanted to get a drink. In his words: “I was already curious about her. I knew when she asked to get a drink, she was interested too. It wasn’t a date, but it felt like one.”  They immediately hit it off. Before the night was over, Ryan asked her out on a formal date and they’ve been together ever since.

These two are adorable, quirky, sweet and just simply awesome. In working with my couples during their engagement shoot, I always get a great sense of who they are and how they work together. These two are the best balance to each other; they compliment each other in such a positive way and they are always laughing. Emily also happens to be a florist, creating some of the most beautiful floral arrangements I have ever seen. Because of this talent, she has an amazing eye for detail and style. She made sure to style her engagement shoot and wow did she look stunning- from her accessories, to the gown, to Ryan’s boots, I loved it all. All of the details were personal and well thought out which gave me a lot to work with.

Ryan decided to set his proposal beside the old Colorado Street Bridge, amongst the trees and a setting sun. They took a  brisk hike then took a break beneath the bridge. He then asked her to marry him.  This was actually their first time back to the bridge, since he proposed, which made the shoot that much more meaningful. We all got a little teary eyed with excitement

“Our Wedding is the next adventure of many. It’s hard to explain, but sometimes you just know when everything is right.” -Ryan

I adore this couple and I cannot wait to document their wedding.

Georgie Rose was approximately one month old when I shot her portraits but still super tiny. She’s the second sibling in the family now, I documented her brother a few years before her. For this round of portraits, her mother had one request, “her hair!… I love it and want to document it at this stage.” It did have a life of it’s own, taking on a kind of hipster peak or fro hawk. Because I’ll be seeing them again in 6 months, we decided to keep this session all about Georgie Rose so that the family could send out their announcements.  Mom often came in though for skin to skin bonding time or to wrap her hands around her, reminding her that love is always near as we documented. Georgie’s favorite activities right now… She enjoys sucking up her bottom lip, gripping tightly onto mama and papa’s fingers and is just starting to lift up her head, often moving it side to side to take in all around her.  She was a natural with the camera, often gazing up at it in wide wonderment. We only had to take one mini break in-between before she was wide eyed and curious again.  Many thanks to Georgie Rose and her family, welcome to the world little one. I can’t wait to see you again in five months.
