Family Portraits in Los Angeles are always magical due to the wide variety of sunny landscapes and textured terrain. For this family session, we had the agonizing decision of whether to shoot at the beach or go green within Griffith’s expansive park. It was a tough call but in the end, we decided to go green. The morning of the shoot, it was a refreshing eighty-five degrees and our backdrop was a soft collage of warm woods. The park was a nice break from the city and made for the perfect outdoor photography studio. Of course, we still brought our studio lights, filters, and bounce boards but due to their wireless and light weight nature, they were easily transported… into nature. ;o)

Our family for this family portrait session was the Tran Family. They were one of our larger family sessions this year, with twenty-one members in total, from all over the states. It had been five years since their last shoot so we wasted no time in getting started.

This is always my favorite time of the year, not just because of the many holidays and the cheer that accompanies them but also because of the numerous Christmas cards! From October to December {jcp} becomes a holiday conveyer belt of family portraits, for the sole purpose of creating the perfect family Christmas card… and I loves it! The amount of imagination, planning & excitement that go into these is amazing and the kids are always uber excited.

For this family, we always start off with the same conversation-

Family: “I have no idea what we’re going to do this year. I have no idea how we’re going to top last year. We’ve done everything! ”

(I’ve worked with them for six years now/ about nine different sessions and themes, it’s a lot but definitely not everything… 😉)

Me: Do you have any new locations you frequented with the family this year? hobbies that you performed together? What were the kids into this year? Favorite show? song? movie? etc…”

Family: “I have no idea…”

and then it just clicks- the questions seep in, the aha moment occurs and the creative concept begins to reveal itself. This year, for this family, it was going to be all about Legos. Genius! The boys had thousands of them, had built everything from houses to ships to police stations. They even had a room dedicated to the whole movement, where dad could often be found, building and creating right alongside them. Each member of the family even had a Lego figurine that looked just like themselves. It was serious business. Once I heard all of this, I knew it would make the perfect Christmas card for them.

By finding out what the family loves, I’m usually able to then highlight a variety of ideas. Family portraits, in my opinion, should absolutely reflect the joy and love of the entire family. They should document who they are for that moment in time and showcase what it is that makes them tick. It’s important to have the traditional poses but it’s also equally important to capture their personality and character. The kids especially, love this approach. So I had them build and play as a family for about twenty minutes and then had them pose individually and then as a family. This session was heaps of fun and the family card was a definite success within their community of family and friends. It brings a smile to my face every time I see it. Thanks guys!

Tis the season!… and there will definitely be many more family portraits sessions posted to the blog; tons of examples and new ideas for future sessions. Here’s to the holidays, here’s to documenting them and here’s to all of the holiday cheer being sent through the mail this month. I’m so happy to be a part of it all.

On December 21, 2012… the world didn’t end. Yep that’s how this post opens because that is how my latest couple met, at an “End of the World” party, thrown by a mutual friend. Guests were asked to come dance, celebrate and enjoy a few beverages as they counted down their last moments on earth, as prophesied by the ancient Mayan Calendar. Well the end of the world didn’t happen and so Shannon and Jeff were then free to take their first date together. Two years and four months later, Jeff decided to propose, on a kayak, in the middle of Puerto Vallarta Mexico. I mean, does it get more original and romantic than that?!

She said yes of course!

Their wedding took place at The Wedgewood Eagle Ridge, a private golf and Country Club in Gilroy, California. This venue is wrapped in green, lined with palm trees and surrounded by an expansive backdrop of mountains. So naturally, most of the wedding took place outside.

The bride and groom had decided not to see each other before the ceremony but found a moment to hold hands, share their love and say a silent prayer together, just before the ceremony.

Although Shannon’s parents couldn’t be there, she made sure to keep them close. This locket, designed by: Origami Owl, was given to her by a friend and was wrapped around Shannon’s bouquet so her parents could be with her every step of the way.

Their colors were red and creme. Debbie Hernandez at I Do Wedding Cakes was the artist behind their beautiful three-tier wedding cake, lined with a colorful pop of red roses. As guests approached the reception, they were directed to their appropriate tables with movie tickets; tickets to Shannon and Jeff’s favorite romance flicks and each table was titled appropriately. Shortly after lunch was served, the Bride and Groom danced their first dance to “Here comes the Sun” by the Beatles and then, the dancing never seemed to end. It was an electric dance floor, filled with energy, excitement and love for the newly wed couple.
