We’ve all been to a wedding where the food wasn’t exactly – let’s just say – memorable. In fact, you may have experienced the rubbery chicken, wilted over drenched salad and the rolls that had the consistency of a hockey puck. Not only was the food mediocre, but there’s a high probability that the food per person was incredibly high. Last year, the average cost of getting a wedding catered was between $51-$73 per person, which is A LOT. And at hotels, the cost per guest can be even pricier than that! If you’re a bride-to-be and you’re searching for ideas to save money on catering costs, but still want your guests to have an amazing food experience, just try a food truck…seriously! Food truck catering is not only a growing popular alternative, but it’s also less expensive and cooler.

WHY A FOOD TRUCK AND NOT TRADITIONAL CATERING?

The answer is simple. It’s a one-stop shopping opportunity and comes with the personal touches truck operators are happy to make from personalized menus to creating menu items specifically for the event. In addition, when guests walk up to the truck, they can order a meal to their specifications ensuring they get what they want. Most, if not all, trucks can accommodate to meet the dietary needs per order, making it easier on you to not have to worry about Aunt Edna and her gluten free diet! Also, you’re not limited to one cuisine, you can have more than one truck so guests can savor different flavors of the world.

While there are food trucks that still only offer the traditional walk-up window service, more truck chefs are getting creative by offering interesting and freshly prepared food and providing the traditional service options at a fraction of the price. The savings come from the fact that you get to eliminate costs on kitchen rentals and additional staffing that is normally required when using traditional catering services. That’s good news for the happy couple and probably the parents too. These chefs are also willing to think outside the box, customizing menus and working with clients to create a memorable meal guests will talk about way after the event is over.

WHAT ABOUT DESSERT AND LATE NIGHT SNACKS?

If you’re willing to move beyond the traditional wedding cake or if you want to have your cake and eat it too, dessert trucks are your best bet to bring a little twist to a timeless moment at a reception. Maybe opt for trucks that focus on mini custom desserts or let you create your own sundae. Who doesn’t love carnival treats?! Funnel cake, fried Twinkies, homemade ice cream sandwiches. Yum!

If you’re not looking for a dessert truck to replace the traditional wedding cake, maybe you’re just looking for a late night snack attack before your guests depart. Tacos, pizza, sliders and fries are always a hit to sober up those who maybe had a little too much fun at the party.

WHAT ABOUT COST?

When breaking down the costs of what you are getting, you’re paying about $20 per person for having a food truck at a wedding for at least five hours (which includes preparation, travel, set-up, service and teardown). With a food truck, you don’t have to worry about rentals for a kitchen, service wares, staffing, clean-up, etc., is well worth it. Not only are you getting a killer deal to have a dedicated mobile restaurant drive up, service, pack up and leave, but it’s less stressful, less mess and more cost effective for your budget overall. Also, you don’t have to worry about having your bridesmaids, family member and friends count every last glass and plate the next morning (while hungover probably) so you don’t get stuck with a hefty bill, cutting into that honeymoon fund.

For today’s blog, I wanted to share a very special vendor with you all, Divine Spark Yoga.  Divine Spark Yoga is a company dedicated to the ideal that Yoga is accessible for every body type; at any stage in one’s life; and any individual who is open to its infinite possibilities.  It was established by Wendy Obstler, who is not only an on going client of mine but a great friend as well.    She is a Registered Yoga Instructor through the Yoga Alliance, Certified Yoga Therapist and member of the International Association of Yoga Therapists, as well as the Lead Teacher/Ambassador for Strong YogaTM4 Women.  In other words… she’s a rock star.  She has cherished a steady yoga practice for 8 years and In 2010, completed her certification in the prestigious Yoga Therapy Rx program at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, and is now in a year-long intensive Internship at Tensegrity Center for Yoga Therapy in Santa Monica.  Why am I mentioning her?  Well she’s recently added a branch to her practice, for weddings.  I know, (yay!)  What a fantastic idea right?!  In her own words, “Being ‘present’ and ‘in the moment’ is so important, especially on a day like your wedding day. No matter if it’s one of the betrothed, the mother of the bride, father of the groom, Grandma, or Uncle Jim, someone along the way is going to get stressed or uptight or worry about something to do with the wedding day. Taking an hour at some point – either the day before or day of the wedding – to connect with the breath, become aware of the body and where tension is being held (and then release it) creates an opportunity for SHIFT. We shift our focus to simple things; we notice how we feel and we become more grounded. Creating that space allows the mind to quiet, even if just a little, so that we can be focused on what really matters.”

I strongly believe in the power of Yoga, try to practice it daily and love how it makes me feel when I do.  So when Joe and I tied the knot back in October, I made sure that Wendy was one of the first vendors I hired.  She turned out to be one of our best investments.  Since I was already a messy stress bag from all of the planning, I knew that I would be in great need of her guidance and breathing techniques for the day of.  She rocked my world.  Going on little sleep, I was hazy when I woke up that morning.  My mind already hanging on every detail and expectation.  She brought me back to the now.  She came to my room at 6am and conducted an hour long session for me and  my girls, tailored it around my individual needs and goals.  We focused on meditation, stretching and breathing exercises.  I’ll never forget it.  The girls and I had the penthouse suite all to ourselves, plenty of space with a killer view of the desert right outside our window.  As we quietly balanced, the sun slowly peeked in on us.  It was beautiful.  The perfect start to an unforgettable day.  I cannot explain to you the confidence and clarity that this session brought, not only me but my girls as well.  We were a true team from that hour on.  Powerfully focused and ready for the days events; ready to focus on what was truly important.  After documenting and attending so many weddings I’ve often heard the bride mention how fast the day went by and how they often don’t remember much of it.  I think that’s a shame.  We put so much effort and time into the planning of our day, that we are often times swallowed by it.  I did not want that to happen with Joe and I.  I wanted to be in the moment, watching it as if I were documenting it.  I wanted to remember my new groom, the nuances of our vows, the laughter of our best friends and the cherished wisdom of our family.  Most importantly, I wanted to remember why it was that we were all there.  I can honestly and proudly say, I achieved that goal; we achieved that goal.

Thank you Divine spark Yoga for keeping it simple and reminding me to breath and Wendy . . . well, namaste.  You are a ferocious business woman and a beacon of light to the community of yoga.  I look forward to many more years of your friendship and guidance.
